Open everyday 12.30pm-1pm and 6pm-6.30pm.
Sextantio le Grotte della Civita
Via Civita, 28, 75100 Matera MT

Welcoming, meeting, living together. The three values that establish the concept of Matera Alberga passed on by six artists in the spaces of the same number of hotels scattered around the city. Installations and works create a bridge between rocky and contemporary civilisation.

The Eternal Ear

For Hotel Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita in the heart of Sassi, the oldest part of Matera, Georgina Starr’s presentation, curated by Francesco Cascino, is focused on listening and time-travel. The artist invites visitors into the deconsacrated chapel at the heart of Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita to experience a metaphysical journey. A female voice gently guides the visitor backwards in time: first through the cave architecture and eventually inside their own minds to unearth a memory from the past. Inspired by the complex history of the Sassi and the surrealistic writing of Adolfo Bioy Cesares, Starr hopes to conjure a moment from a shared, personal or fictional collective past.
